Asking someone's name
There are two equally correct ways to ask someone’s name:
- Zein da zure izena? — “What is your name?”
- Zure izena zein da? — the word order can vary; both are natural.
Structure
- Zein = which / what (in questions involving a choice)
- izena = the name (the final
-ais the article “the”) - zure = your / yours
- da = is
How to answer
You have two options, equally valid:
- Nire izena Egoitz da. — “My name is Egoitz.”
- Egoitz naiz. — “I am Egoitz.” (the pattern from the previous lesson)
The basic possessives are nire (my), zure (your), bere (his/her). You’ll see them many more times later on — start getting familiar with them now.
