How many siblings do you have? (Zenbat senide?)
To talk about how many members a family has, we use:
- Zenbat senide zarete? → “How many siblings are you?” (asked in the plural: the total number of siblings, including you)
- Familia handi/txiki bat dut. → “I have a big/small family.”

Saying how many you have
Here we meet a first form of the verb ukan (to have), which we will look at in depth in upcoming lessons:
- Anaia bat dut. — I have one brother.
- Bi anaia ditut. — I have two brothers.
- Hiru seme ditut. — I have three sons.
- Ez dut anaiarik. — I have no brothers. (negative form)
dut is used when what you have is a single thing or a noun in the singular. ditut is used when it is several things. It is like the difference between “I have a book” (singular) and “I have books” (plural).
Typical phrases in introductions
- Familia handi bat dut: bi anaia eta arreba bat. — I have a big family: two brothers and one sister.
- Senide bakarra naiz. — I am an only child.
- Zure familia handia da? — Is your family big?
Age
- Zenbat urte dituzu? — How old are you?
- Hogeita hamar urte ditut. — I am thirty years old.
- Hirurogeita hamabost urte ditu. — He/She is seventy-five years old.
