Saying how many you have

Here we meet a first form of the verb ukan (to have), which we will look at in depth in upcoming lessons:

  • Anaia bat dut. — I have one brother.
  • Bi anaia ditut. — I have two brothers.
  • Hiru seme ditut. — I have three sons.
  • Ez dut anaiarik. — I have no brothers. (negative form)

dut is used when what you have is a single thing or a noun in the singular. ditut is used when it is several things. It is like the difference between “I have a book” (singular) and “I have books” (plural).

  • Zure familia handia da? — Is your family big?
