Is there…? — existence with bada/badago

In English we sometimes blur two distinct ideas: existing (“is there a pharmacy in the neighbourhood?”) and being located (“the pharmacy is on the High Street”). Basque distinguishes these two things very clearly, and it’s worth fixing early on.

To exist vs to be located

To be located	concrete noun + place + dago	Taberna kalean dago. — The bar is on the street.

When you ask whether something exists (not where it is, but whether there is any), use the pattern with bada(go).

The question: Ba al dago…?

Both forms are common:

• Ba al dago + X-rik? — standard form (with the interrogative particle al).
• Bada(go) + X-rik? — everyday form, without al.

Examples:

• Ba al dago botikarik herrian? — Is there a pharmacy in the town?
• Badago supermerkaturik auzoan? — Is there a supermarket in the neighbourhood?
• Ba al dago komun publikorik? — Are there public toilets?

The affirmative answer

To answer “yes, there is” you reply with the merged form bai, badago:

• Bai, badago. — Yes, there is (one).
• Bai, badaude. — Yes, there are (several).

And it can be expanded:

• Bai, badago botika handi bat eskolaren ondoan. — Yes, there’s a big pharmacy next to the school.

The negative answer: -rik

To say “there is no” we use the partitive -rik on the noun:

Ez dago komun publikorik.	There are no public toilets.

The suffix -rik (or -ik after a consonant) is the “partitive”: it marks an indefinite noun in questions and negations. We’ll also see it with other verbs (Ez dut anaiarik — “I have no brothers”).

Once you know it exists — ask about the location

Once they confirm it exists, the natural thing is to ask where it is, and there you switch to the pattern from the previous lesson:

— Ba al dago kutxazain automatikorik herrian? — Is there a cash machine in the town?

— Bai, badago. — Yes, there is.

— Non dago? — Where is it?

— Banketxearen ondoan dago. — It’s next to the bank.

— Egun on, barkatu! Auzoan ba al dago liburutegirik?

— Bai, badago.

— Eta non dago?

— Plazaren ondoan, eskolaren atzean.

— Eskerrik asko! Eta kafetegirik?

— Ez, hemen ez dago kafetegirik, baina taberna bat badago.

Mnemonic tip: for existence think “ba” (= “there is”) + dago/daude. For being located just think of plain dago/daude. And -rik shows up almost any time you say or ask about something indefinitely.
