Is there...? — existence with bada/badago

In Spanish, we use a single verb, “haber/estar”, for two different ideas: to exist (“is there a pharmacy in the neighborhood?”) and to be located (“the pharmacy is on Main Street”). Basque distinguishes these two things very clearly, and it’s something worth getting down early on.

To exist vs. to be

When you ask if something exists (not where it is, but if there is one), use the pattern with bada(go).

The question: Ba al dago…?

Both forms are common:

Ba al dago + X-rik? — standard form (with the interrogative particle al).
Bada(go) + X-rik? — everyday form, without al.

Examples:

Ba al dago botikarik herrian? — Is there a pharmacy in the town?
Badago supermerkaturik auzoan? — Is there a supermarket in the neighborhood?
Ba al dago komun publikorik? — Are there public restrooms?

The affirmative answer

To answer “yes, there is”, you reply with the fusion bai, badago:

Bai, badago. — Yes, there is (one).
Bai, badaude. — Yes, there are (several).

And you can expand on it:

Bai, badago botika handi bat eskolaren ondoan. — Yes, there is a big pharmacy next to the school.

The negative answer: -rik

To say “there isn’t/aren’t any”, we use the partitive -rik on the noun:

The suffix -rik (or -ik after a consonant) is the “partitive”: it marks an indefinite noun in questions and negations. We will also see it with other verbs (Ez dut anaiarik — “I don’t have any siblings”).

When you already know it exists — asking for the location

Once it’s confirmed that it exists, it’s natural to ask where it is, and then you switch to the pattern from the previous lesson:

— Ba al dago kutxazain automatikorik herrian? — Is there an ATM in the town?

— Bai, badago. — Yes, there is.

— Non dago? — Where is it?

— Banketxearen ondoan dago. — It’s next to the bank.

Complete mini-dialogue

— Egun on, barkatu! Auzoan ba al dago liburutegirik?

— Bai, badago.

— Eta non dago?

— Plazaren ondoan, eskolaren atzean.

— Eskerrik asko! Eta kafetegirik?

— Ez, hemen ez dago kafetegirik, baina taberna bat badago.

Mnemonic tip: for to exist, think “ba” (= “there is/are”) + dago/daude. For to be (located), just think of the normal dago/daude. And -rik appears almost every time you say or ask about something in an indefinite way.
