Gehiegi, gutxiegi, gero eta — excess, defect, and progressive

~12 min

This lesson completes comparisons with two more pieces:

  1. Excess and defect (-egi, gehiegi, gutxiegi).
  2. Progressive comparative (more and more / less and less: gero eta…).

Plus some useful modifiers to add nuance (pixka bat, askoz, dezente).

The suffix -egi — “too”

To say something is excessive, you add -egi to the adjective (and then the final -a if it goes with a definite noun):

AdjectiveExcessive
handia (big)handiegia (too big)
txikia (small)txikiegia
garestia (expensive)garestiegia
beroa (hot)beroegia
hotza (cold)hotzegia
zaila (difficult)zailegia
azkarra (fast)azkarregia

Alkandora hau handiegia da niretzat. — This shirt is too big for me.

Kafea beroegi dago. — The coffee is too hot.

Ikastaroa zailegia zen guretzat. — The course was too difficult for us.

Gehiegi and gutxiegi

As independent adverbs:

EnglishBasque
Too muchgehiegi
Too little / not enoughgutxiegi
Too many peoplejende gehiegi
Too little waterur gutxiegi

Gehiegi jan dut. — I’ve eaten too much.

Gutxiegi lo egiten duzu. — You sleep too little.

Hori gehiegi da niretzat. — That’s too much for me.

The progressive comparative: gero eta + -ago

For “more and more X” or “less and less X”, Basque uses a very expressive formula:

gero eta + adjective/adverb-ago(a)

EnglishBasque
More and more expensiveGero eta garestiagoa
Colder and colderGero eta hotzagoa
Better and betterGero eta hobea
Worse and worseGero eta okerragoa
More and moreGero eta gehiago
Less and lessGero eta gutxiago
Faster and fasterGero eta azkarrago
Slower and slowerGero eta polikiago

Bilbo gero eta handiagoa da. — Bilbao is getting bigger and bigger.

Eguraldia gero eta okerrago dago. — The weather is getting worse and worse.

Gazteek gero eta gutxiago hitz egiten dute euskaraz. — Young people speak Basque less and less.

Mnemonic tip: gero eta literally means “later and” — the idea is “later, and later, and then more…”. It’s the Basque way of expressing progression.

Hain — “so” (with or without negation)

EnglishBasque
It’s so bigHain handia da
It’s not so expensiveEz da hain garestia
It’s so beautiful!Hain polita da!

For “not as… as…” you use bezain (previous lesson):

Ez da zuk uste duzun bezain ona. — It’s not as good as you think.

Quantity modifiers

To add nuance to comparisons:

EnglishBasqueExample
A littlepixka batPixka bat handiagoa (a little bigger)
A bitzerbait / zertxobaitZertxobait txikiagoa (a bit smaller)
Quite a bitdezenteDezente hobea (quite a bit better)
MuchaskozAskoz hobea (much better)
A whole lotaskoz hobea / askoz garestiagoa

Etxe hau zurea baino askoz handiagoa da. — This house is much bigger than yours.

Pixka bat goizago etorriko naiz. — I’ll come a little earlier.

Hain… ezen / hainbeste… (formal register)

Beyond a strict A2 level, it’s useful to recognize:

  • Hain + adjective + non/ezen — so… that: Hain pozik zegoen, non kantatzen hasi zen (he was so happy that he started to sing).
  • Hainbeste — so much/many (emphatic quantity): Hainbeste lan dago!

Mini-text

Garazi sukaldari ona da, baina kafea beroegi ipintzen du beti. Lehengo egunean hain bero zegoen, ezen ezin nuen edan! Eta hori ez da dena: pintxo bakoitzean olio gehiegi botatzen du. Pixka bat gutxiago beharko luke. Hala ere, hura gero eta hobea da: orain dela urtebete askoz okerragoa zen.

Mini-dialogue

— Olatz, etxe berri hori zer moduz?

— Eder askoa, baina garestiegia zen guretzat. Eta logelak txikiegiak ziren.

— Eta orain bilatzen ari zaretena nolakoa da?

Gero eta zailagoa da etxebizitza on bat aurkitzea. Prezioak gero eta altuagoak dira eta etxebizitza on guztiek dute lehia gehiegi.

Cultural note: the scarcity of affordable housing (etxebizitza) is a recurring topic in any A2-level conversation about current events: gero eta garestiago, pisu eskuragarri gutxiegi, askoz okerrago lehen baino. This lesson gives you the vocabulary to participate.
