Ordering food (eskatu)

This lesson brings together the formulas for ordering at the table: structuring lehen/bigarren/postrea, saying “for me” and expressing preferences.

The waiter’s question

The waiter will open with one of these:

• Zer nahi duzu(e)? — What would you like?
• Zer hartuko duzu(e)? — What are you going to have?
• Pentsatu duzu(e)? — Have you decided yet?

Structuring your order

To organize what you order, there are three very useful markers:

Euskera	English
Hasteko…	To start…
Bigarrenerako…	For the main course…
Postrerako…	For dessert…
Edateko…	To drink…

Complete example:

Hasteko, entsalada nahi dut. Bigarrenerako, legatza. Postrerako, izozkia. Eta edateko, ardo zuria.

To start, salad. For the main course, hake. For dessert, ice cream. And to drink, white wine.

Three ways to order

Niretzat…	Niretzat, legatza	for me…

Niretzat is very useful when one diner orders for everyone: “Niretzat legatza, eta zuretzat?” (For me, hake, and for you?).

Preferences

• Nahiago dut… — I prefer…
  • Nahiago dut arraina haragia baino. — I prefer fish to meat.
• Ez dut … nahi. — I don’t want…
• Ez zait gustatzen. — I don’t like it.
• … gustatzen zait. — I like…

Mini-dialogue at the table

Zerbitzaria: Egun on! Zer nahi duzue bazkaltzeko?

Maialen: Nik, hasteko, arrain-zopa nahi dut.

Egoitz: Eta nik entsalada epela.

Z: Eta bigarrenerako?

Egoitz: Bakailaoa saltsan.

Maialen: Niretzat legatza, mesedez.

Z: Edateko, zer nahi duzue, ardo gorria ala zuria?

Maialen: Ardo zuria nahiago dut arrainarekin.

Egoitz: Niretzat ardo zuria ere bai, mesedez.

Cultural note: in small restaurants it’s very common for one diner to order for the whole group (Niretzat legatza eta beretzat haragia — for me hake and for him/her meat). That’s why niretzat / zuretzat / beretzat are highly productive words from day one.
