Doing the shopping (integration lesson)

~12 min

This lesson brings together what you have learned in the unit. We are going to put together a shopping list, sort the products by shop, and act out a mini-dialogue.

The shopping list (erosketa-zerrenda)

Before going out, we check the fridge (hozkailua) and the cupboard (armairua). Whatever is missing, we write down. Some typical products:

CategoryProducts
Barazkiak (vegetables)tipula, letxuga, tomatea, piperra, baratxuria
Frutak (fruit)sagarra, banana, laranja, mahatsa, marrubia
Haragia (meat)oilaskoa, txuleta, urdaiazpikoa, txorizoa
Arraina (fish)legatza, antxoak, ganbak, bakailaoa
Esnekiak (dairy)esnea, gazta, jogurta, gurina
Bestelakoak (others)ogia, arrautzak, olioa, ozpina, gatza

Asking whether there is something (with -rik)

To ask whether a shop has a product, use the partitive -rik:

  • Ogirik baduzu? — Do you have bread?
  • Sagarrik ba al duzue? — Do you have apples?
  • Esnerik behar dugu. — We need milk.

And to say that there is NONE:

  • Ez dago ogirik. — There is no bread.
  • Ez daukat sagarrik. — I don’t have any apples.

The partitive -rik is always used with indefinite quantities and in negation. The product form goes without an article (ogirik, not ogiarik).

Splitting the shopping between shops

A typical conversation when planning:

Non erosiko dugu ogia? — Where will we buy the bread?

Okindegian, jakina! — At the bakery, of course.

Eta arraina? — And the fish?

Auzoko arrandegian. — At the neighbourhood fishmonger’s.

Frutak eta barazkiak? — And the fruit and vegetables?

Plazan, beti bezala. — At the market, as always.

Mini-dialogue at the greengrocer’s

Frutaria: Egun on! Zer nahi duzu?

Bezeroa: Egun on! Kilo bat sagar eta hiru banana, mesedez.

F: Bai, hemen daukazu. Besterik?

B: Bai, kilo erdi tomate ere bai.

F: Tira, hemen.

B: Zenbat da dena?

F: Bost euro eta hogei zentimo.

B: Tori! Eskerrik asko!

F: Zuri! Agur!

To review

  1. Quantity + product: kilo bat sagar, litro erdi esne, dozena bat arrautza.
  2. Asking politely: Jarriko al didazu…? / Eman…, mesedez.
  3. Closing the purchase: Zenbat da dena? — X euro. — Tori! — Eskerrik asko!
  4. Negation with a product: Ez dago …rik (with the partitive).

Cultural note: many families do their “daily” shopping at the neighbourhood shops (fruta-denda, harategia) and only go to the supermarket for packaged goods. It is a very common mix of channels that is especially noticeable on Saturday mornings in any town.

Ejercicios

You are at the greengrocer's. How do you ask for half a kilo of apples?

"There is no bread" is said…

"How much is everything?" = Zenbat da ?

To ask whether they have a product: "Do you have milk?" = Esne ba(d)aukazue?
