Mediku-kontsultan — dialogue at the doctor's

This lesson is a complete doctor’s visit simulation. It combines vocabulary from the previous lesson with time expressions (how often, before/after) and common formulas. The doctor’s visit is one of the most useful contexts for A2: it appears in any official exam.

Asking for an appointment

Egun on. Hitzordua eskatu nahi dut familia-medikuarekin.

Variations:

Hitzordua eman ahal didazu? — Can you give me an appointment?
Larrialdietara joan behar dut. — I have to go to the emergency room.
Bihar goizerako badago tarterik? — Is there a slot for tomorrow morning?

Frequency with -ro

To indicate “every X time”, Basque uses the suffix -ro on the time noun:

It’s the same -ro you already used in egunero (every day) in A1. Here you’re just extending it to hours and other units.

Before / after eating

The doctor’s instructions often include these formulas:

Jan baino lehen — before eating
Jan ondoren / Jan eta gero — after eating
Goizean baraurik — in the morning on an empty stomach
Lo egin baino lehen — before sleeping

”Better” / “worse”

To answer how you’re feeling:

Note: hobe (adjective) and hobeto (adverb) are irregular. There is no *onago — the comparative of ona is hobea. We’ll see this in detail in unit 4.

Model dialogue

— Egun on. Zer duzu?

— Eztarriko min handia daukat, eta uste dut sukarra ere badudala.

— Noiztik?

— Duela hiru egun hasi zen.

— Ikusiko dut… Bai, eztarria gorri-gorri daukazu. Hartu pastilla hauek jan ondoren, zortzi orduro, hiru egunez. Edan ur asko, eta hartu atseden. Hobeto ez bazaude astebete barru, itzuli.

— Eskerrik asko, mediku.

Key phrases to memorize

Hitzordua eskatu nahi dut. — I want to ask for an appointment.
Min handia daukat hemen. — It hurts a lot here.
Duela bi egun hasi zen. — It started two days ago.
Errezeta emango dizut. — I’m going to give you a prescription.
Errezetarik gabe saltzen al duzue? — Do you sell it without a prescription?
Bajan nago. — I’m on sick leave.

Cultural note: Osakidetza (the Basque public health service) has its own bilingual terminology; many forms and signs appear in Basque first. Familiarizing yourself with words like anbulatorioa, larrialdiak, or errezeta will help you find your way around any center.
